The jointer is an important attribute for carpentry. External indicators and the principle of its work resemble the familiar plane. However, the jointer is more elongated in shape, allowing it to process large surfaces. On his sole are 2 knives. This device for processing wood has a stopper, which allows to loosen its fastening and in time to sharpen, replace the knife or handle.
Making a handmade jointer is very easy. One has only to learn how to deal with elementary carpentry tools. With your own strength and diligence, you can replenish your arsenal with important equipment.
Necessary tools for work
To make this carpentry tool yourself, you need to stock up on raw materials. Need strong wood, allowing you to create a solid block. The best option would be the natural breeds of oak and larch. Their incredibly solid wood will provide equipment with a long operational life.
As tools useful:
- the bolts.
Planing techniques: a - a bank; b - jointer; in - the position of the legs when planing; 1, 2, 3 - pressure on the plane, respectively, at the beginning, middle and end of planing.
A wooden bar is taken, in its center with a chisel and a hammer a rectangular opening is punched through. The sides of such an opening are placed at an angle of 45 °. The finished knife, the dimensions of which correspond to 200 × 65 mm, is fixed on one of the sides of the hole and is reinforced with a wooden thin plate. It is inserted into the extended opening. A shock tube is defined in the middle.
The handle should be comfortable for work, so its shape is selected individually. This important detail can be made from multi-layer plywood. The finished element is inserted into the hole and tightly bolted on both sides. Grooves for them are prepared in advance.
Recommendations for making:
- When choosing a jointer knife, a rectangular pattern should be preferred.
- For maximum convenience, the device is equipped with a handle and a blade, each of them must be presented in duplicate.
- The knife should not bulge on the work surface.
- Details of small length are processed by the jointer, the length of the pad of which is equal to 500 mm, the angle of the cutting plane corresponds to 45 °.
Making jointer from electric planer
Make a jointer with his own hands can be another way. To do this, take:
- strong box made of natural wood;
- 3 plates of plywood of different thickness;
- electric plane;
- fasteners (nuts, bolts).
On the eve of such works, drawings are being prepared, the dimensions of the future equipment are pretending, and polished plywood sheets are fitted to it. Such simple measures will avoid errors in the future and eliminate unnecessary actions at the time of assembly.
The box for the future instrument can be ready or hammered on its own. This container should have a rectangular, elongated base without bottom. The finished box is closed with plywood, in which a hole is cut in advance. The plane is put here bottom up. On the base plywood plate 2 sheets spread out on top.
The peculiarity of this material used is the fact that one of these plywood will be 2 mm thicker than the other. It performs the receiving function; a wooden beam is taken on it as a result of the joking. Another layer will be 2 mm thinner. This layer performs the function of promotion. The bars move further, on the planer knife.
The lower part of this equipment is lifted above the plywood layer, seeming to be the same plane with the sole and the receiving layer. The feed layer will be 2 mm higher.
Jointer body is securely fixed with bolts and nuts, which can always be tightened or loosened.
These simple tips will quickly and efficiently make an important construction device.
