The plane is generally a tool for leveling the surface using the planing method. When processing wood planing is carried out by cutting a thin surface layer of the material. This method does not work for aerated concrete. It has a porous inhomogeneous structure, so cutting a thin layer will lead to the pulling out of inhomogeneities and significant surface irregularities. Sometimes it is possible to use a conventional plane to level the aerated concrete with a minimum reach of the cutting edge, but it quickly wears out and becomes unusable.

In order to design a device for processing aerated concrete, it is necessary to understand the basic parameters of the material. Aerated concrete blocks are made on a cement-sand base with the addition of gypsum, lime and slag, into which a gas-forming composition (aluminum paste) is introduced to create gas pores. After curing under special conditions, the material acquires a solid structure, in which pores of up to 3 mm in size are evenly distributed. One of the varieties of porous aerated concrete is gas-silicate concrete based on lime and quartz sand with a low cement content.
Parameters of standard blocks of aerated concrete.
Aerated concrete is cut into standard blocks with a fairly stable size. The blocks are mainly realized in the size of 250x625 mm and in thickness from 50 to 500 mm. Particularly stable geometry of the blocks is observed in gas silicate concretes. When laying walls, the following thickness of blocks is normalized: for bearing layings - 38-40 cm; for interior walls - 25 cm; for facing works - 10 cm. When processing the surface especially should be considered strength and hardness of the material. Cement-sand base leads to a rather high abrasive tool wear. The strength of the blocks depends on their density, which, depending on the porosity, varies widely (from 300 to 900 kg / cubic meter). The strength varies from 10 to 50 kg / sq. Cm.
Structural blocks with a density of more than 700 kg / cubic meter have the greatest strength. Such blocks are used when laying the bearing walls of large buildings and high structures. Blocks with higher thermal insulation properties, having a density of about 500 kg / cubic meter, are often used. Aerated concrete with a density of 400 kg / cubic meter has a much lower strength and hardness, but it must be treated with caution due to the high content of pores.Back to table of contents

A plane on aerated concrete is needed to align a number of blocks when laying walls of them. Their task is just as much material as is required to ensure the horizontal surface of the row. If too large a layer is removed, then such a block will have to be thrown away, as it will be very difficult to correct the situation. Planer construction for aerated concrete blocks.
To make a plane, you need to lay in the design of the most affordable materials. The body, the easiest way to make wood. For these purposes, suitable board with a thickness of 40-50 mm and a width of 10-12 cm. You can fix any handle that is in stock. If you have to make it, it is better to make it from a wooden board or a bar.

The plane for the alignment of aerated concrete with his own hands is made in the following order. The board is cut in length of 30-40 cm. The cut board is processed by a plane. All edges and corners are rounded or simply cut off. Mark the location of the cutting elements. The markup is as follows. On one side of the board (in an area of approximately 40% of the total area of the board), 5 parallel lines are drawn at the same distance from each other. The lines should be at an angle of approximately 70 ° to the longitudinal axis of the board (slope to the right of the cross section). The same lines are drawn on the other side of the board, but tilted to the left. Lines in different halves of the board should be directed towards each other.
Jigsaw made slots on the marked lines. The slot width should be sufficient to accommodate the saw blade. The saws are produced, departing from the edge of the board by 2-3 cm on both sides. The board is carefully processed with emery cloth. The blade breaks into pieces of the desired length and is inserted vertically into the slot. Before placing the file in the saw blade, its cloth must be carefully lubricated with glue. The length of the flight of the file above the surface is about 5 mm, but it is better to consult a specialist in each case. The site of placement of the nail file at the base is processed with glue. After the glue dries, it is necessary to check the quality of gluing of each cutting element with the base. All excess glue is scraped off.
If the cutting edge of the file is not sharp enough, it should be sharpened with a file.

If the worker does not have skills to work with a plane for aerated concrete, then it is recommended to make a simple additional device that limits the deepening of the cutting elements into the material of the blocks. The principle of operation of the device is that the slats form the guides along which the base of the planer moves, and the height of the slats limits the deepening of the knives.
The device is made as follows. Two boards with a thickness of 20-30 mm are used. Their upper ends should be perfectly flat and polished. The ends of the boards are fastened together with wooden bars overlap. The length of the bar must strictly correspond to the width of the aerated concrete block (taking into account the additional length for fastening). Planing aerated concrete block is made when moving the base of the planer parallel to the level of masonry. The movement of the plane is made in one direction from itself with the application of a small effort. It is not recommended to use a plane for wood instead of a special planer, since it is possible to damage both the tool and the gas block. The generated dust when planing must be removed both from the surface of the block and from the planer.
