Drill in the house is necessary. This is one of the most frequently used tools, without which it is impossible to do if you need to repair or do something with your own hands. While the drill is working, everything is going well. Suddenly something fails, and immediately the question arises how to remove the cartridge from the drill.
Such a task seems elementary. But if a person is used to the fact that the drill always works well, then it becomes a problem. It turns out to decide how to remove the cartridge from the drill, you need to find out how it is mounted on the shaft, and only then carry out certain work.
Reasons for withdrawing
In the absolute majority of types of drills, a cartridge based on the cam principle of operation is used to fasten the drill. The cutting tool in the elements of this type is firmly fixed when approaching 3-4 cams, which have a tapered part and move in the longitudinal direction to each other, due to the rotation of the regulating sleeve along their cone. Rotation of the adjusting sleeve is made manually (quick-clamping) or with a special key (ordinary or key cartridge).

During the operation of electrical devices, there are cases when the question arises how to remove the cartridge from the drill. So, sometimes you have to face the fact that there is a beating of the drill. In this case, the cause may be the offset of the center of attachment of the drill due to cam wear. To repair the drill, you must remove the cartridge from the shaft. It will also have to be removed if the question of how to remove the drill, in the case when it is jammed, is not solved. The cause may be damage to the cams or wear of the gear teeth of the adjusting sleeve. The drill can only be removed after disassembling the chuck.
In addition, it is necessary to unscrew the chuck if it starts to rotate relative to the shaft of the drill. The cause may be damage to the mounting thread or subsidence of the landing cone. Mechanical damage may change it. Finally, the decision to simply put a more universal mechanism could lead to the replacement of a new cartridge.Back to table of contents
Existing types of fastening
Chuck on the shaft of any drill, screwdriver or perforator is mounted in two ways - using a threaded connection or on a cone. A variation of the threaded connection is the use of an additional locking screw.
Threaded fastening means that an identical thread is made on the shaft of the drill and on the internal channel - metric or inch. Therefore, in this case, the repair raises the question of how to unscrew the cartridge. The type of thread and its main parameters are marked on the body. For example, the designation 1.5-15M13x1,2 is stamped on the case, which means the following:
The principle of removing the drill chuck.
- 1.5 and 15 - the minimum and maximum diameter of the shank of the drill in mm;
- M13 - metric thread with a diameter of 13 mm;
- 1,2 - thread pitch.
If an inch thread is used, then UNF is entered, and the diameter is indicated in inches (for example, 1/2). When replacing the cartridge, be sure to check the compliance of the marking with the mounting size. Modern drills generally have an inch thread, which corresponds to international standards and expands the possibilities of interchangeability.
For reliability of fastening on a shaft in the device the lock screw is installed. This screw has a left-hand thread, i.e. in order to unscrew it, it is necessary to turn it clockwise.
The second method of mounting the chuck on the shaft of the drill is based on the use of a Morse taper. In this case, the end of the motor shaft is made in the form of a cone. The internal channel from the bottom end has a similar conical part. The cartridge simply fits over the shaft cone. The marking of such elements has several meanings: B10, B12, B16 and B18, where B means the use of a Morse taper, and the numbers represent the maximum diameter of the drill shank, which can be fixed in this cartridge. This method of attachment is quite common, especially in screwdrivers.

Removing from threaded connection
Types of nozzles for the drill.
The question of how to remove the cartridge connected with a threaded connection with the main shaft of the drill is solved in the following order. First, the inner locking element is unscrewed in the form of a screw with a left-hand thread (it is unscrewed the other way round, that is, clockwise) using a cross-head screwdriver. Then, unscrew the cartridge counterclockwise. As a rule, it is twisted tight. Therefore, it is necessary to fix the drill shaft in a vice. It is advisable to unscrew the cartridge with a gas (plumbing) key. If it is also necessary to remove a drill that has been seized firmly, then the cams, along with the drill, are knocked out by applying gentle blows from above.
Installing a new item is carried out in reverse order. The chuck is twisted clockwise with his hands, while the drill shaft is fixed with one hand. Then the internal locking screw is twisted counterclockwise.Back to table of contents
Disassembling a cone specimen
Removing the cartridge mounted on the shaft cone is usually not difficult. You can use a special device for removing bearings. But the easiest way is this. Drill is installed vertically, drill down. Light blows of a hammer, evenly over the entire surface, the cartridge is knocked out of engagement. If necessary, after removal, the surface of both cones is ground. A new element is set by light blows of the mallet on top of the cartridge.

Sometimes complete with a perforator is a device for removing such a cartridge, in this case the task is even more simplified.
Removing the drill
To prevent the drill from sliding on the glossy tiles, the place of the intended hole can be taped and marked with a cross.
Jamming the drill does not always require removing the chuck from the shaft. Sometimes the question of how to remove the drill from the drill is solved without repair. With a significant clamping of the drill should apply a vice. The drill is clamped in a vice jaw, and horizontally with a jaw. The body of the drill is fixed motionless. The surface of the cartridge is easily knocked by a hammer. After that, not very strong blows with a hammer to the cartridge are sharply applied. These strikes should be directed tangentially to the sleeve. Impacts at different points continue until the tail end of the drill is extended from the jaws.
Further increase the load by using a gas wrench. In this case, the drill and the drill body are rigidly fixed in a stationary state, and the key is rotated in a clockwise direction. Finally, it makes sense to suggest the use of two plumbing keys. In this embodiment, one key rigidly fixes the shaft of the drill, and the other key scrolls the cartridge. If necessary, the key can not be hit very hard with a hammer to give the initial movement.Back to table of contents
In order to remove, change and install the cartridge on the shaft of the electric drill, it is necessary to prepare an ordinary tool in a timely manner:
- a mallet;
- gas wrench (pipe);
- Phillips screwdriver;
- grinding sandpaper;
The failure of electric drills does not always cause big problems. If the reason lies in the cartridge, then the question of how to remove it from the drill, is solved simply by yourself. True, it is usually not subject to repair, and it will just have to be replaced with a new one. But removing the jammed drill often does not lead to the repair of the cartridge, but only requires certain skills.
