Laminate flooring has become an extremely popular flooring material. Made on the basis of fiberboard, it is used in residential and commercial premises. Laminate is well cut, this property makes it easier to lay laminate floors, which even a layperson can handle.
In order to get high-quality laminate flooring, you must learn not only how to properly lay it, but also to cut it.
Nevertheless, this building material does not tolerate negligence in processing, which may result in a marriage. Consider what to cut laminate to cut the panel looked like they were made on the machine.
Hand tools for cutting laminate
For cutting laminate, you can use a hacksaw for metal with fine teeth.
Laminate is made from wood processing products. This determines its high adaptability in processing. However, not every cutting tool can cut the laminate. Take, for example, a hacksaw for wood. It would seem that it should easily cope with its task, but it has too large teeth, which damage the top layer of the panel when sawing. In addition, the pressed material to cut it will be difficult. In addition, the edge of the panel after sawing will be tattered.
More acceptable for cutting laminate hacksaw. Although its small teeth damage the facing film of the material, it is still not to the same extent as when working with the tool on wood. True, cutting laminate to it is tedious, but for cutting a small number of panels, the edges of which will be hidden from sight, a handsaw for metal is quite suitable. Since the handsaws cannot be called the main tool for cutting flooring, the techniques for working with them will be discussed at the end.Back to table of contents
Power tools for processing laminated coatings
The circular saw is used to cut laminate in a straight line only.
You need to get acquainted with the tools that are more adapted to the processing of laminate. Of course, modern materials are much better suited for power tools. Moreover, they have almost any home master. Electric jigsaw works with high performance. Using it, you will not make a noticeable effort, but get high-quality panels.
Other electrical appliances for wood processing should not be used. A reciprocating saw (electric hacksaw) differs from a conventional hacksaw only in the presence of an electric motor, which accelerates the process, but does not improve the quality. A circular saw is unlikely to be used when figure sawing, and its saw blade is not suitable for fine work. Separately, it is worth mentioning the grinders, which are recommended to cut laminate by some “experienced” advisors. This tool is designed to handle very different materials. True, there is a special tool - a cutter for laminate. But it is advisable to acquire it only if you are engaged in laying laminated flooring on a professional level.

If you lay the coating once every few years, it is best to cut the laminate with an electric jigsaw. The machine will be suitable for the operation, but not everyone has it. It should be noted that when working with a jigsaw you can leave chips on the front side of the laminate. So that they do not form, you need to follow certain rules.
Driving figure laminate using jigsaw.
- Saw laminate electric jigsaw should be at the maximum speed of rotation of the electric motor.
- Try to go through the entire line of cutting material at a time, without slowing down and stopping.
- Pendulum jigsaw mechanism must be turned off.
- It is necessary to use files intended for cutting laminate. Otherwise, attach the file with small teeth to the tool.
- The thinner the file, the easier it is to make figure sawing.
- Before cutting, securely fasten the panels on the workbench. Use for this clamp.
- As a rule, the jigsaw teeth are directed upwards, therefore it is necessary to saw laminated plates, putting them face down. In this case, the cladding will not form chips. Fragments of the surface along the cutting line are pulled out from the side of the jigsaw's sole when the file with its upward pointed tips returns. There are files with the reverse arrangement of the teeth. When using them, laminate should be laid on the workbench with the front part facing out.
- Scotch tape glued along the cutting line of the laminate will help protect against chipping.
It should be emphasized that chips on the laminate (and not only on it) are formed due to the fact that the rising teeth of the canvas tear out fragments of the material, since it is not pressed along the cut line. A simple device that is attached to the sole of the jigsaw, will press the processed material over almost the entire area. You can make it from MDF. The dimensions of the lining should be equal to the area of the sole of the jigsaw. In MDF, a slot is made, the length of which corresponds to the distance from the front of the sole to the back of the file. The lining is attached to the sole with two strips of double-sided tape. It must be said that the device is short-lived, but reliably protects the workpiece from the formation of chips. In addition, it does not leave traces from the sole of the jigsaw.

Of course, we should not forget that high-quality cutting of the material is possible only after applying accurate marking on its surface.
How to cut with hand cutting tools
Now you can return to the techniques of working with manual cutting tools. For cutting laminate better fit wood saws, which have the smallest teeth. Before you start cutting laminate, you need to draw on it the contours of the cutting line. After that, the material should be securely fastened on a workbench. The front of the panel should be on top. From the formation of chips on the facing side, as when sawing with an electric jigsaw, a tape of transparent adhesive tape glued to it will protect it. As for the hacksaw, it is convenient to use it only when cross-cutting. When longitudinal cutting work will interfere with the hacksaw frame. This drawback is deprived of a hacksaw, in which the blade is simply attached to the handle.
It is worth mentioning another tool that can be used for cutting laminate. True, a lot of material they do not file. A construction knife is applied to the ruler and a deep cut is made along it in a panel placed on a flat surface. After that the laminate is cracked by hands.
