Jigsaw and how to use it correctly

One of the great advantages of our time can be called a breakthrough in the field of building technologies. Experienced craftsmen easily create really beautiful interior items, and a variety of tools allow them to do it efficiently and quickly. However, to achieve such results, the ability to work exclusively with each tool is necessary. Today we will give you useful tips and talk about how to properly use the jigsaw.

Power Jigsaw

The jigsaw is used to cut wood and cut various elements from it.

But first, let's determine what we might need this tool for. First of all, it is famous for its versatility, because it is suitable for various tasks: cut a circle, or make a rectangular hole of the desired diameter, make a straight cut of any material. The electric jigsaw is also capable of cutting the ceramic tile, provided that you have special complementary elements - saw blades. The latter are one of the most important parts of an electric jigsaw, as the quality of work depends on the quality of the blades.

The jigsaw device.

Saws designed for electric jigsaws are made from a variety of materials, have a difference in size, shape, and also in the form of sharpening and breeding teeth. Such differences are due to the variety of materials with which you can work. For example, for working with wood, the step of sawing should be 2.5-4 mm in size, for working with metals, 1-2 mm. Diamond dusting on the file will help to work better with materials such as glass, ceramics, tiles, and with non-ferrous metals a wave-like cutting edge on the file will be suitable. When buying the saw blade you need, it is advisable not to forget that some types of files may not be suitable for your jigsaw.

Components of jigsaw

Proper use of this tool depends on the knowledge of the owner in the composition of the electric jigsaw. Since in 1944, the Bosch company released into the world its first copy of this multifunctional device, its component has undergone many changes, but its basic design has remained unchanged. So, jigsaw has the following components:

  • gearbox (its body must be made exclusively of metal, since the eraser casts doubt on the strength of the tool, as it impairs heat transfer);
  • sole (the best variant of the sole material is cast metal, because some electric jigsaws have a plastic plate, which has a very bad effect on the quality of work);
  • engine body (electric jigsaw is considered good if it is this part that is made of the best quality, sturdy material, because this is where the engine is located);
  • lever.

Principles of proper operation

In general, a jigsaw is an electric-powered saw that is designed to cut any material using reciprocating movements along the vertical axis with a saw blade.

Despite the fact that the appearance of the canvas is quite miniature, and its size ranges from 50-120 mm, it is the main element of the jigsaw. The responsible manufacturer of electric jigsaws always equips its tool with a mechanism that allows the saw to perform, in addition to vertical movements, pendulum oscillations, which generally increase many times the cutting speed and prolong the service life of the saw blade.

Eye and hand protection when working

Eyes and hands when working with a jigsaw must be protected.

However, you should be aware that the use of this mechanism is not suitable for those cases when you need a fair, accurate cut, as it assumes a wide web pitch and the possibility of small serifs. When it is necessary, for example, to cut a piece of ceramic tile and to maintain the accuracy of the cutting line, the pendulum move is completely unacceptable. The most suitable materials, where its use would be appropriate and benefit, wood, plywood, plastic, chipboard.

If you know that your work will be predominantly with solid, durable materials, for example, with steel sheets, then your jigsaw needs to have a lot of power and a rigid attachment of the file in order to work quickly and efficiently. In order to perform any work at home, the jigsaw must have a power in the range of 285 to 560 W, while the effective power of the device must not be less than 140 W. One useful note on your part would be to check for the presence of frequency adjustment moves. If it takes place, regardless of the frequency - low or high, the jigsaw will always work at full capacity, and this will make your work even more efficient.

What is the speed of the saw to use?

Choosing speed jigsaw for different materials

The choice of speed jigsaw for different materials.

As you know, in order to get a quality result, you need to take into account all the details. Even an experienced master can always make a mistake. And the important role played by the speed with which you will carry out the work. Before you decide how many times to increase the speed of the file, you must determine whether you need it? If the work that you have to do, involves a finishing cut and needs to be done without the slightest inaccuracy and blots, then the cutting speed should be extremely slow, and you should not increase it in any way, for example, when working with kitchen tiles. However, there are materials in which a high speed of the file is a necessary guarantee of quality.

When working with steel sheets, increasing the speed of work is a necessity. High speed will heat the steel, making it more suitable for shape change and completely malleable. If the speed is low, then working with steel sheets is extremely difficult. A high speed of the step of sawing is also needed for working with glass, which can crack otherwise, for working with hard woods and other dense materials. But the use of high speeds when working with plastic can lead to completely undesirable results: the edges of this rather soft material can melt, and the appearance of the result will leave much to be desired.

Jigsaw in a straight line

After you have decided on the choice of the saw blade and selected the appropriate speed for your material, we will proceed directly to the process itself. To begin, consider the option when you need to perform the most simple work - cutting in a straight line. To do this, you must perform very simple steps: we install and fasten a guide on the electric jigsaw and then we start it by the edge of the working material. This ensures that your file will move smoothly in a vertical line relative to the edge. If the edge is uneven and is not an ideal line that you must draw, then a drawing is applied to your workpiece, for example, with a pencil, and the jigsaw is cut directly along this line.

The features of this process also depend on the material that you cut, since working with a thin wooden sheet involves arranging the workpiece so that the front side “looks at the floor” in order to prevent chipping. Do not forget to firmly secure your material on the workbench, which will avoid shifts during the cutting process, because if there is one, the cutting line will be cut and the result will not be what you expected.

Electric jigsaw on a curve

If you need to make a round hole in your blank, you should do the preparatory work. You must have an initial hole in your material for further input into it files, which you must prudently drill in advance. Further, as in the version with cutting in a straight line, you must draw a drawing of the circle that you need and cut according to this drawing.

To make cutting in the form of a square or quadrangle, cutting is performed in a straight line to each of the edges of your shape. However, when the file reaches the angle, it is impossible to cut it out without undesirable damage, therefore the file is led to the next side along the curved path. So, after the implementation of the cutting process on all sides, work is carried out to remove the remaining parts of the material while observing the perfect correctness of the corners.

It is necessary to monitor the sharpness and quality of the file when working, when it is damaged or dull it must be replaced with a new one. If this is not done, the pressure on the electric drive rises, and this, in turn, contributes to the failure of the tool. Finally, having familiarized yourself with the principles of correct work with an electric jigsaw, you can begin to work with pleasure!
