Self-made vice will be much more durable and cheaper than those that were manufactured at the factory and purchased in the store. As for the U-shaped clamp, it is unable to serve for quite a long time. As a rule, it is possible to use it until the swivel head comes out of its original position, while it starts to dangle, and then completely falls out of the movable jaw. Such a tool, although it can be used in work, however, there will always be inconveniences during operation, expressed by the need to tirelessly hold the hinge mate during the installation of the clamp. From such a tool should not immediately refuse, since it can be useful.
The vice is a tool which is intended for fixing of details at different types of processing.
If you have a desire to purchase a carpentry vice for your workbench, then their cost may surprise you unpleasantly. Kits that require self-completion by the master, involve the expenditure of time resources, can cost several hundred dollars. In addition, you have to buy or use your wood. However, for a skilled master there is a solution that consists in using elements of the old clamp. By applying this material, you can make a vice, while not a penny will be spent. In the process, you can use the available tools that will make the work cheaper.
Preparation for work
To carry out the work to be prepared some materials and tools:
For the manufacture of vise at home will require a U-shaped clamp.
- archery saw, which can be replaced with an angle grinder;
- circular saw;
- drill with chisel;
- broken U-shaped clamp;
- self-tapping screws, the size of which is 8 cm;
- wood glue;
- bolt with washers (15 cm);
- dowel (2.5 cm).
Making a vice from a broken clamp
Before starting work, unscrew the moving sponge from the tool. If there is no swivel, it is easy to get rid of the sponge. However, when it was decided to use the tool in working condition for operation, it is recommended to cut it off.
To remove the coupling from the base of the clamps, you will need a metal saw.
After that, you need to take a saw to work on the metal. Replace it with an angle grinder, which has a rapidly rotating disk. Using any of these devices, you can remove the clutch from the base, you need to make a cut before turning. At the same time some part of the hull should be left. A large number of such clamps is molded, which will make them quite easy to cut using a hacksaw. They are often cast, giving them the shape of the letters T or I. This indicates the need to cut some component of the material, while there should be a place in which you need to drill 2 holes for mounting screws.

Cutting boards and arrangement of holes
To carry out the work, it is necessary to prepare a bar, the dimensions of which are 5x15 cm.
These dimensions should correspond exactly to the height of the existing table. It will act as a mounting base. Manufactured structure to be fixed to the leg. It is also necessary to prepare a second bar with dimensions equal to 5x15 cm. Its length should be equivalent to approximately 60 cm. It should be used as a board for the clip itself. Installation will be carried out at a level that is 10 cm above the surface of the desktop. In addition, it is necessary to prepare two bars with dimensions of 5x15x9 cm, they will represent the front side of the new tool.
For the manufacture of the mounting base you will need a wooden bar with a size of 5x15 cm.
Now it is necessary to determine where the screw will be located. In this example, it is set at 30 cm from the upper area of the clipboard. The main idea is that at a higher position of the screw, the clamp will become more pressing, but if it is strengthened lower, the range will be wider. Experts recommend mating the bars so that the board for the clip was removed by 10 cm. After you have to drill an oversized hole of 0.5 cm in the place where you intend to place the screw. This will determine its future installation location and will make sure that the holes match.
As soon as you are convinced of the latter condition, you should equip the mounting base with a hole for mounting the coupling on the side to be fixed to the table. At this stage, it is possible to drill a hole further, taking into account the diameter of the existing screw. Now you need to drive the clutch into the hole. The wedge will allow it to fit very tightly, while the presence of the tongue will guarantee a quality mount.
A screw channel will be needed; it must pass through the board for clamping. The master can equip several holes, which will be located one behind the other. After that, the excess material can be removed with a hammer and chisel. The channel to be equipped should be 4 cm in length, but its width should be equal to the dimensions of the existing screw.
The next step is to fix the front area to the clip and mount it at a level that is 1.27 cm higher than the table surface and the top area of the circuit board.Back to table of contents
The principle of the hinge mount
To create a mounting vice is used hinge.
Two blocks should be cut out from the base of the clamping board; each of them should have dimensions of 4x9 cm. Through the remainder, you need to arrange a horizontal hole 2.5 cm from the end, its dimensions should be equal to the size of a 15-cm bolt. This will be the area of fixing the hinge.
Now you can create and supplement the clamp support blocks. Their size should be equal to 10 cm, only after you can begin to arrange the holes with a size of 15 cm. It must be placed, like the bolt, 5 cm from the top. It is necessary to use a round file, which will allow to lengthen the holes up to 2.5 cm. After the two channels are cut, you can install the blocks in the mounting base. When mounting, you must apply carpenter's glue.

For the screw it is necessary to prepare the gasket. You can use a hole saw, which will help cut a disk (5 cm) from a 5x10 cm bar. After a hole is made in the central part, its diameter should be equal to the diameter of the screw.
