Every home craftsman has a tool designed to cut wood or metal. However, from time to time, the hacksaw needs to be sharpened, but, in order for it to acquire its former sharpness, these works should be carried out correctly. Not all hacksaws can be sharpened. So, tools that have red-hot teeth should not be sharpened. The hardened working surface of the instrument can be identified by the black color with a bluish tint. For sharpening ordinary teeth it is worth armed with a file with a small notch.

Before sharpening a hacksaw, it is recommended to arrange the teeth. This is necessary so that the working part of the tool moves easily in the body of the wood and is not clamped in the saw. This ensures a wider cut.

Saw classification

Saw classification.

You should not do unnecessarily large dilution, as this will cause a ragged cut, and it will be necessary to advance the tool, making great efforts.

The size of the wiring for a tool intended for working with wood should be 1.5–2 times the thickness of the working surface of the saw, which, as a rule, is 1.5–2 mm. Thus, the teeth should be bent down by 0.25-0.5 mm in both directions, if you have to work with a dry solid wood; and 0.5-1 mm, if you have to cut raw or soft wood.

The hacksaw will have teeth, divorced by one magnitude, if you use the wiring - a steel plate with a gap.

In order to dissolve the teeth, the canvas of the tool should be placed in a vice, the teeth at the same time should be a little bit. The plate must be fixed on the desktop. Bend the teeth need to alternately in different directions. You should not bend the entire tooth, it will cause its breakdown.

Technology sharpening hacksaws

Sharpening a handsaw

Sharpening a hacksaw with his own hands.

Before sharpening your hacksaw, you need to strengthen it well. It is necessary to apply a file, and then to clean the edges of the teeth with a file. You can do the last procedure using a file that has a small velvet notch. If you do not need to use a new file, its working surface should be cleaned with a metal brush, rubbed with charcoal after it, this will prevent blunting and clogging of the surface.

Sharpening is the process of partially removing a metal layer. During this it is important to observe a certain pressure on the teeth. At the same time, the handle of the file should be grasped with the right hand, and the end should be held with the left, directing the tool at the teeth. Returning the file to its original position should not allow interaction with the teeth.

Sharpening becomes a cause of burrs, you can get rid of them with a file that has a velvet cut, while you can remove them from the side face of the working surface with a wet wheel.

At the last stage, it is necessary to analyze the sharpness of the teeth. Looking at the edge of the blade, you should not see the brilliance, it indicates a high-quality sharpening. If shine is noticeable on some teeth, then they need to be additionally sharpened with a tool with a velvet notch.

In order to sharpen the teeth of the transverse tools, you need to apply a triangular file with a small notch, the angle must be equal to 60 °. In order to start working on sharpening, the tool must be clamped at an angle limited by the limit of 45-50 ° relative to the surface of the table. The file should be directed at an angle of 60 to 75 ° to the canvas, this will allow to achieve the sharpness of the first tooth belonging to the left side. At the next stage, you can start working with the right edges of odd teeth. Once you have managed to sharpen the odd teeth, you can turn the canvas over to begin working with even teeth. At the same time, it is important that sharp edges are formed in each tooth, the angle of which is 60-75 °.

To sharpen a hacksaw, which is called a longitudinal, you need to use a file with a rough notch or rhombic files that have a small notch. Before sharpening the work surface of the longitudinal saw it needs to be strengthened vertically. Next you need to determine how the work will be carried out. The first method is called direct, it involves the use of a file at an angle of 90 °, which should be directed horizontally in relation to the canvas. This will get rid of a small amount of metal located on the back and front edges of the tooth. Now the device needs to change the position of the tool in order to sharpen the teeth in the far row of another row.

The second method is called oblique and differs from the above described direction of the tool to the working surface of the hacksaw, the angle of sharpening is equal to the limit of 80 °. This method allows you to get the side edges used when working with bow saws.

Work with mixed saws

Preparing a hacksaw for work

Preparing a hacksaw for work: a - tooth separation; b - sharpening.

A hacksaw of mixed sawing, designed for working with wood, should be sharpened with a file that has a rough notch; as an alternative, you can use a rhombic file that has a small notch. You can apply it in one of two ways, the first is called oblique (90 °), the second is straight (75-80 °).

The clamping unit consists of a plywood base with dimensions of 550x200x20 mm. On the basis of mounted two steel rails.

Sharpening begins after the installation of the tool so that the teeth above the surface of the clamping bar protrude by 20 mm.

There are clamping installations designed to work with large tools and two-handed saws. They are based on two transversely located strips, the length of which is equal to 550 mm, and the cross section - 40x30 mm. The device has a 1,100 mm rack, the cross section of which is equal to 60x40 mm, and clamping blades with dimensions equal to 450x150 mm, the latter made of 15 mm plywood. Pairing of crossbars and racks is made by screws.

Installation must be installed, taking into account a certain sequence. From the surface of the floor at a slight height, you need to strengthen the crossbar to the uprights, then you need to install the right leg on it in order to mark the level of fixation of the upper crossbar, while the knee should rest on the latter. This allows you to get the stability of the rack associated with the workbench. In order to sharpen the tool, it must be positioned between the clamping bars so that the teeth are facing up. Now you can mount using bolts with thumb nuts. As soon as it was done with sharpening the teeth on one side, the tool should not be removed from the clips, the device should be turned over, and then continue to work with the teeth on the other side.

In order to sharpen hacksaws, you need to stock up on such materials and tools as:

  • wiring;
  • file;
  • file;
  • clamping device.

As you can see, you can also sharpen a hacksaw with your own hands, for this it is important to follow the instructions given. Do not use a dull tool, because this may cause it to break down.
