Soldering parts at home

Soldering is the old, reliable and simple way of fastening metal parts together. Household soldering is mainly used in the repair of technical appliances and various household items.

Choosing a tool for soldering at home

The main soldering device is, of course, a soldering iron. Most often for soldering metal parts at home using rod electric soldering irons. Soldering irons for the house have a simple structure consisting of a copper tip, which is sharpened at one end under a cone. In this device, the point ("sting") is not only possible to adjust, but, if necessary, change it. Soldering irons come in various capacities. The power source is usually an electrical current (in exceptional cases, a burner can be used). When buying a new soldering iron, you should make a choice based on the thickness of the parts that need to be joined. For soldering radio components, a tool of 40 watts is enough. But such a device would be unsuitable for connecting thick wires.

Before starting to work, the soldering iron must be thoroughly cleaned, and after that it will be lame. It must be remembered that a new instrument may produce a peculiar smell when it is first turned on. You should not be afraid of this, because after warming up the instrument, the smell completely disappears. The working surface of the device can be cleaned with a file or sandpaper. The copper tip must be protected with a thin layer of solder. This is done in order to prevent the oxidation of copper. For these purposes, most often used brick, which put a little solder and a small piece of rosin. For the same purpose, ammonium chloride (solid ammonia) can be used. In a piece of ammonium, they make a small depression and put tinol there. Moving the blade of the tool across hard saline, the tip is covered with a layer of solder. The sting can also be placed in a solution of zinc chloride.

Work execution technology

  1. First, clean all connecting contacts and parts.
  2. Heat the soldering iron and apply flux to the tip.
  3. Cover with flux contacts.
  4. Sting put tinol.
  5. A solder wire is applied to the tip of the soldering iron.
  6. Bring the sting to the place of contact spikes and fix the soldered parts as securely as possible with tweezers (before applying a drop of solder).
  7. The junction must be preheated for a few seconds (it is important not to burn it).

Useful tips

Soldering should be performed as quickly as possible, since the flux can be charred very quickly. In some cases, additional stripping may be necessary. It is not allowed to move parts until the solder is completely hardened. Metals that can be easily smelted: galvanized tin, lead, steel, copper. In no event it is impossible to solder aluminum at home. The flux should be chosen based on the chemical resistance of the material from which the parts are made.

When working, it is imperative to observe precautions, especially when using acid (it tends to splash when heated).

Usually soldered elements overlap. Such a connection is more reliable and durable. Eyes should be covered with special goggles, and skin with protective clothing. Do not allow the presence of children or pets during work. In order for the work to be done qualitatively, take care in advance of good lighting in the room where the parts will be soldered.
