The word "jigsaw" is probably familiar to many since childhood. At one time, this tool, consisting of a specifically extended upwardly rounded carrier frame and a short, very thin file clamped at its ends, was the main device for cutting out patterns in thin materials such as plywood or plastic.
The jigsaw device.
Today, an electric jigsaw is used for similar homework, in which short and narrow, fairly flexible files and an electric motor are brought in, which sets them in motion by means of a transmission mechanism.
These tools can work on wood, plastic and metal, and the cuts can be of different complexity, depending on the problem to be solved. It is not difficult to choose a jigsaw, if there is an exact knowledge of the nature of the upcoming work, in which this tool will be directly involved.
Before choosing, you should familiarize yourself with a brief register of the main models of electric jigsaws on the market, with their features, positive and negative characteristics, and then formulate a list of the necessary parameters for the purchased tool. In this way, you can approach the answer to the question of which jigsaw to choose for your home. And you need to keep in mind that each additional function included by the manufacturer in the model increases its value. Therefore, when assessing the performance of a model, it is necessary to inventory its functions and determine their need for a home tool.
Characteristics of electric jigsaws

Currently on the market are numerous models of such tools. The main differences between them fit into two points:
- battery powered or mains powered tools;
- models of professional or intended for domestic (domestic) use with a much lower intensity.
In connection with the possible occurrence of situations when the jigsaw will have to do the necessary cuts in the absence of electricity, such models have been developed whose power is supplied not from the nearest electrical outlet via the appropriate power supply cable, but from the supplied battery.
Such models should be purchased in cases where it is known that using this jigsaw for the most part will be in the absence of a power supply network or electrical outlet near the work site. If this is the case, then select the mobile battery model of the electric jigsaw, taking into account all the specifics of battery maintenance, and also with the understanding that when the power supply fails, it will be easier to buy a new jigsaw than a new battery.
As a rule, models of electric jigsaws powered by a fixed electrical network are more widely used.

The division of tools into classes of professional or intended only for use in home, living conditions due to the load to which these tools are subjected. Professional models are used throughout the working day, with some technological interruptions, and household models are used only for solving local, short-term tasks, as part of domestic work.
Accordingly, the service life and quality of the latter is somewhat lower, as evidenced by their lower price compared to models designed for professional use.
In order to be able to easily navigate in the classes of manufactured electric tools, some manufacturers for their models introduced differences in the color of the plastic of their bodies:
- the blue color of the body indicates the professional affiliation of the instrument;
- The green color of the plastic case is used for household models.
If you select the specified electric tool only for local needs, excluding its professional use, then there is a big reason to pay attention only to the household segment and only consider its products in the future so as not to overpay for the professional quality of the instrument being purchased.Back to table of contents

Parameters and functions of jigsaws
Types shank nail files for jigsaw.
Household models of such tools may differ by the following parameters or functions:
- method of fixing the file;
- the possibility of using / not using different types of files for cutting various materials;
- the possibility of removing sawdust from the direction of motion of the jigsaw;
- the ability to change the angle of inclination of the cutting element to the cutting plane;
- the ability to change the speed of movement and direction of the cutting element;
- the presence of elements of control over the correct direction of the cut;
- weight of the device and its ergonomics.
Jigsaw Selection Guidelines
Device homemade jigsaw.
The thickness of the required material and the speed with which it can be cut with it will depend on the power of the chosen tool. If the jigsaw work will consist only in processing one material - plywood, then about 300 W of power will be enough. If the power tool is purchased as a multi-purpose, that is, to work with any materials inside the house, then it is desirable to select its power in the range from 600 to 700 watts. However, it should be borne in mind that a more powerful tool is also more difficult.
The second factor is the weight of the battery (for mobile devices). The clamping element - a cartridge that fixes the shank of the file, can be clamped using a clamping screw (under a screwdriver or a special key) or using a mechanical “quick clamp” system. This system, winning in the clamping speed of the inserted file, sometimes loses its fastening reliability. Moreover, with such a clamping system, not all types of files are inserted into the chuck.
Fixing the blade in the chuck with the clamping screw is longer in time but more reliable. It should be noted that in this way it is possible to fix the cutting element with a web of any thickness, which is very convenient for the home.Back to table of contents
Types of saw blades and cutting modes
The electrical circuit of the motor start.
Cutting elements - files (saw blades) for electric jigsaws are produced of different types both in terms of mounting the blade (shank), and in the type of the cutting blade itself (in thickness, width, shape, pitch and direction of the teeth):
- for wood based materials;
- for wood and plastics;
- for metal, cement, stone and ceramics;
- for rubber, cardboard and leather;
- for multilayer materials.
Accordingly, it would be best if the chosen jigsaw could work, if not with all, then with most types of files. Therefore, when choosing such a tool, it should be clarified with the seller with which types of files the particular model works.
Without being constrained in choosing only one, only a certain type of sawing, the operator of such a jigsaw can simply solve all the problems of the quality and speed of the necessary cuts, providing the operation with the necessary saw blades for almost any material. However, it should be noted that to obtain a high-quality cut it is not enough to have the file you need for this material. It is also necessary to know how to do this correctly.
When working with an electric jigsaw, dust and sawdust formed in the process of saw blade movement fall asleep the applied line along which the cutting is carried out. In order to avoid flaws during such work, it is necessary to remove sawing waste in time either by blowing them out with a jigsaw fan or by sucking them with a vacuum cleaner connected to this tool. To use any of these methods, it is necessary to provide for the presence of a corresponding function in the model of the device being purchased.
In addition, in the process of choosing the optimal model of electric jigsaw (also called jigsaw), you must take into account the function to change the frequency of movement of the saw blade and the direction of its movement.
The latter is called the "pendulum move" jigsaw saws. These functions are very important when setting the mode of operation of this power tool. For example, when cutting a metal sheet, it is necessary to ensure the minimum frequency of movement of the saw blade without changing its direction of movement. This will ensure optimal cutting speed and safety of the jigsaw saw blade. If necessary, the cut in the wooden beam should, on the contrary, apply the maximum frequency of movement of the file with its "pendulum swing" turned on, when the lower saw blade moves forward, takes the cut line along the intended line, and retracts backwards, rising. This mode seriously improves the performance of the jigsaw on wood.
Practitioners notice that when working with an electric jigsaw, two negative trends can occur:
- care of the saw blade from the vertical;
- the appearance of chipping the surface of the processed material on the line of cutting.
These troubles can be avoided by correctly selecting the saw blade and the parameters of its movement: the frequency of vertical movement and the span of the “pendulum stroke”. For example, nail files with teeth pointing down leave behind on the surface to be treated smooth, without chipping, cut. This is especially critical for materials whose surface should not have noticeable damage, such as wood-covered veneer. In addition, the “pendulum” mode is recommended to be included mainly when cutting thick wooden surfaces, and the thicker the workpiece and the harder its wood, the greater the pendulum deflection of the jig saw should be. Under this recommendation, the third, higher position of the instrument “pendulum” regulator is set to cut the toughest and thickest wooden parts or surfaces. On thin blanks, this mode is ineffective.Back to table of contents

The correct practical experience and technical capabilities of the selected tool (first of all, its ability to work with various types of saw blades) will help you to choose the right saw blade or the mode of operation of the jigsaw and to make a proper cut. Moreover, the tool holder, clamping the file, should fix it without backlash and skew, stably in the transverse direction, towards the saw.
In normal operation with an electric jigsaw, its sole is perpendicular to the saw blade. However, there may be different situations in which a kerf is required at a certain angle to the plane of the surface to be treated. Therefore, manufacturers of electric jigsaws have developed and produced models in which the sole can be tilted to the saw blade at an angle from 0 to 45 °. But this function may never be needed at home, and without ways to control the compliance of the cutting line to the applied marking it is quite difficult to work. As a result, you should choose an electric jigsaw model, which has a special removable plastic nozzle, which, when installed at the front of the tool's sole, helps to track the accuracy of the cutting line by combining the nozzle markers with the marking applied to the surface to be machined.
Some models of jigsaw electric saws are equipped with a removable side rail, which is also designed for similar purposes, but is not convenient enough. This guide is applicable only in cases where there is a cut around the line (not further than 170 mm) of a flat side face of the treated surface, along which the set guide rigidly guides the jigsaw, making the cut. In this case, it is necessary to solve the problem of the method of fixing the surface on which the jigsaw works, since its operator has both hands occupied: one controls the guide on the leading edge, and the other controls the tool.
Another feature on which, ceteris paribus, one of the selectable models can be preferred, jigsaw handle. It should be borne in mind that the P or D-shaped handles, which are more convenient to control such a tool with one hand, than the mushroom-shaped handles. This is very valuable at home, as at home, usually with a jigsaw handle with one hand, and the second - hold the workpiece.
Along with the selection of models of electric jigsaws on technical data, it makes sense to ask your friends, friends and relatives for such tools. It is desirable to obtain from those of them who use this technique, the characteristics of the models used and possible recommendations for selection.
