Device and design features of metalwork vice

The device of a vice of metalwork, as well as all other types of the clamping tool, looks simply. It should begin with the fact that the vice is a special, as a rule, stationary tool for firm fixation of various kinds of parts made of solid materials for the purpose of their subsequent processing. It is fixed on a special desktop, namely on the workbench, which must have a solid foundation.

Locksmith vice

Locksmith vise necessary for a strong fixation of various parts during their processing.

Often in the grip clamp quite large parts and attach to them a fairly large (often shock) force. This occurs when chopping, riveting, forging or bending blanks. Vice metalwork made of good steel with minor impurities that help reduce the wear of the vice during operation. In addition to steel, they are cast from cast iron. However, be aware that the cast-iron clamping tool is not so reliable. Cast iron with long-term and strong physical effects can crumble or crack.

Vice metalwork come in different sizes. There are miniature models that are used to secure small workpieces and weigh several tens of grams, and truly gigantic samples used most often in production in large workshops.

What do mechanical locksmiths consist of?

Vise Design Elements

Elements of design vise.

Details of which consist a vice:

  • mobile and motionless sponges;
  • screw clamp;
  • attachment mechanism to the workbench;
  • spring;
  • sleeve;
  • handle for rotating the screw clamp;
  • interchangeable linings.

The locksmith vise is an all-metal device that is installed on the working surface of the workbench with the help of bolts that are attached to the base of the fixed jaw. There are also varieties that have a special screw, which allows them to fasten like a clamp. The rotation of the screw mechanism changes the position of the movable jaw relative to the whole structure, forcing it to move in or out. This creates a gap between the interchangeable plates in which the workpiece is fixed for further processing. The clamping tool is often supplemented with an anvil, which is located on the back of the fixed jaw.

Types of bench clamp

Types of metalwork vice.

The locksmith vice is divided into swivel and non-swivel. Non-swiveling rigidly fixed on the workbench and allow you to work with parts only in one position. Rotary bench vise can rotate parallel to the workbench by 60 ° or more around its axis. Some of them, besides horizontal rotation, can also rotate vertically, thereby ensuring work with the workpiece in a wider range of positions than their “fixed” counterparts. However, the weak point of such models is precisely the turning mechanism. This should be taken into account by applying excess force to them.

Replaceable linings are most often made of a softer metal than sponges. Pads are smooth, it allows not to leave marks on the workpiece and very accurately fix it in a vice. Also, the lining is covered with a notch for a more solid and reliable fastening of the workpiece. In addition, there are special elastic pads that allow you to fix the workpiece as tightly as possible, fully distributing the pressure force of the jaws over the entire surface of the part.

Features of operation

It must be remembered that the vise is designed for a specific force effect.

Cast iron specimens are less durable than special grades of resilient steel. Before you begin, it is better to understand what your model is and what material it is made of. In addition, it is unacceptable to handle heated steel parts on a conventional metalwork vice. Changing the volume of the workpiece during cooling will cause the jaws to loosen. This can be dangerous to the life and health of the person working at the workbench.

When working with a clamping tool, do not attempt to enlarge the handle using a piece of pipe or a steel bar that is longer than the original handle. The handles are calculated for this type of mechanism, an increase in its length will cause an increase in the load force on the mechanism of the vice. And this may lead to the failure of the tool. Calculate the weight and dimensions of the parts that you clamp. In no case do not exceed the permissible values. And then the vice will serve you for a very long time.
