Troubleshooting chainsaws

Malfunction of a chainsaw can become a problem when working on a summer cottage during construction or repair.

Chainsaw job

With prolonged operation, any chainsaw will have these or other malfunctions that can be eliminated with their own hands.

Despite the fact that a chainsaw is not very complicated, a sufficiently reliable and affordable tool, breakdowns, its failure or interruptions in work lead to unnecessary time and expenses for the repair or replacement of the tool.

Typical problems with chainsaws

In order to avoid breakdowns and malfunctions of the chainsaw, it is necessary to follow the rules for technical operation and maintenance of the tool. In particular, time to sharpen the chain, to monitor its condition, to prevent loosening, twisting or jamming the chain. If you use a chainsaw with a faulty oil pump that feeds the oil to the chain, the latter can wear out and break. In this case, the replacement circuit. Breakage or seizure of the chain is a common cause of tool failure. It is necessary to monitor the level of oil in the oil tank of the chainsaw, use oils of the appropriate brand, periodically check the condition of the oil pump and monitor the oil supply to the drive chain sprocket.

Other common problems with chainsaws:

  1. Difficulties with starting the engine.
  2. Insufficient engine power during operation.
  3. The appearance of extraneous noise.
  4. Uneven work.
  5. Sharp deviation of engine speed.

Difficulties with starting the engine may be due to the low quality of the fuel mixture, its incorrect composition, moisture or other impurities getting into the fuel. In addition, engine start may not be possible due to damage to individual engine components. Failure of the fuel supply due to clogging of the carburetor, breakage of the fuel hose or high-voltage spark plug wires, clogging of the muffler or jamming of the piston lead to the fact that the engine can not start.

For maintenance and repair of chainsaws, the following tools are used:

  • chain sharpening machine;
  • screwdrivers;
  • a set of keys;
  • pliers;
  • tester or multimeter;
  • thin awl;
  • funnel;
  • measured capacity for oil;
  • fine sandpaper;
  • cleaning cloth.

Breakage of chainsaws, due to wear of the chain, are eliminated by sharpening the chain with the help of a special machine. When installing the chain, you should check the magnitude of its tension, the presence of lubricant, the degree of wear and integrity of the teeth of the drive chain sprocket. If critical wear or deformation of chain links or teeth of the drive sprocket is present, they should be replaced.

The first step in troubleshooting a chainsaw related to starting the engine is to check the presence and quality of the fuel mixture, the process of its supply to the engine. If the fuel mixture has been stored for more than a week, it must be drained and replaced with a fresh one. The absence of a mixture or the difficulty of supplying fuel to the engine is controlled by the condition of the spark after several test runs.

The spark plug turned out of the engine must have traces of fuel, the gap between the contacts must be clean and its size must be 0.5 mm. If the candle is filled with the fuel mixture, it should be gently wiped and dried, and the cylinder and muffler should be freed from excess fuel. Candle gap can be cleaned of carbon with an awl and fine emery cloth.

If the candle is dry, that is, if the fuel does not enter the engine, you need to remove and clean the carburetor.

The device is a carburetor chainsaw

The device is a carburetor chainsaw.

It is necessary to check the integrity of the fuel hose and check the fuel supply from it to the carburetor and engine. For which the fuel hose is disconnected from the engine, as a result, the fuel must flow freely from the hose. If this does not happen, check and replace the fuel hose. In addition, clean or replace the air and fuel filters.

Sometimes the supply of fuel is hampered due to clogging of the hole in the cap of the fuel tank, designed to supply air to the tank. If the hole is clogged, it can be cleaned with a thin awl or needle. The engine of the chainsaw will not work normally and due to clogging of the muffler, for cleaning it must be removed and remove pollution and carbon from it.

To check the operation of the ignition unit, it is necessary to put the cap of the high-voltage wire on the turned out candle, and press the metal case of the spark plug to the cylinder block with pliers with insulated handles. Then, at startup, you can check for the presence of a blue spark, which indicates normal operation of the ignition unit. If there is no spark, it is necessary to ring the ignition wire with a tester and check the serviceability of the ignition lock switch. For normal engine operation, the ignition blocking switch must be open.

A characteristic malfunction of the ignition module is a violation of the size of the gap between the coil and the flywheel magnets. The gap of the ignition unit should be 0.2 mm. If necessary, the gap is set using adjustment screws and a control strip with a thickness of 0.2 mm. A faulty ignition module must be replaced.

Chainsaw piston device

If, after checking the spark plug, fuel hose, carburetor and ignition unit, the engine does not start, check the condition of the cylinder and piston. To ensure reliable operation of the carburetor and the engine itself, the piston and cylinder of the engine should not have scratches, cracks and deposits, the piston rings should freely rotate and adhere tightly to the wall of the cylinder. The surface quality of the devices can be assessed after disassembling the engine and removing the cylinder. The cover of the latter is removed, the piston is removed and checked for damage and scale.

If there is minor damage, the cylinder is bored to the repair size, the piston rings are replaced. The presence of chips, deformations or scratches on the cylinder indicate the need to replace it. Damage of this kind can occur with poor quality fuel mixture, as well as overloading or overheating of the engine during operation.

Preparation of fuel mixture for chainsaw

Preparing the fuel mixture for chainsaws.

To ensure reliable operation of the engine chainsaws must adhere to a number of rules relating to the preparation and use of the fuel mixture. The fuel mixture for the chainsaw engine must be fresh. The shelf life of the mixture should not exceed 7 days. It is desirable to make the fuel mixture in a transparent container, this will allow you to visually check the absence of impurities in the fuel, suspension, condensate and sediment.

The presence of impurities in the fuel mixture, lack of oil or the use of inappropriate brands of gasoline and fuel additives can cause engine failure chainsaws. To add oil to gasoline, you should use a special measuring container, for example, you can use a graduated bottle for baby food. The required amount of oil per 1 liter of gasoline is indicated in the technical description of the chainsaw and is usually 20 g / l. After completion of the work, the fuel mixture from the fuel tank of the saw must be drained, you can also drain the oil from the oil tank.

To maintain the chainsaw in good condition, to avoid breakdowns and malfunctions, it is necessary to monitor the condition of moving parts and parts, check the quality of glands and gaskets, and the condition of the air and fuel filters. Replace worn parts as necessary. Fuel and air filters must be cleaned at least 1 time in 2-3 months. After finishing work with the tool, it is necessary to clean the air intake and radiator, remove dirt from the chain and drive sprocket. Proper operation and maintenance of a chainsaw together with preventive maintenance can significantly increase the uptime of the tool and increase the safety of its use.
