A tool appeared in the stores of building goods, which quite recently was used only in the conditions of open space for performing various repair work and installation of structures. Then it began to be used in enterprises.
Screwdriver is one of the most popular tools in the economy.
And now he has appeared in our hands. This device is a screwdriver. It consists of several assemblies and parts, among which not least is the device for fixing the working bits - the cartridge. How to remove the cartridge from the screwdriver, if it ceased to perform its functions? Before many consumers, sooner or later such a question arises.
Screwdriver cartridge scheme.
The cartridge usually looks like a hollow metal cylinder, equipped with a special ring and an adjusting sleeve. Inside it are cams for fixing the working nozzles. The cartridge is mounted on a screwdriver shaft. For this, there is a tapered surface or thread inside it. The upper part of this site is designed directly for mounting nozzles. Sometimes there is a situation when, for various reasons, you have to remove the cartridge. And how to remove it - it is not said in any manual on the use of the screwdriver.Back to table of contents
Ways of fastening of the cartridge
Cartridges may have some differences from each other. They can be attached to the screwdriver shaft in the following ways:
- using the Morse cone;
- threaded method;
- by means of the fixing screw.
Types of cartridges for the screwdriver.
Morse taper is a very simple and reliable method that has been used since the XIX century. The surface of the shaft is treated with a cone with certain parameters. The same cone is made inside the cartridge. When combined, there is a fast and durable fastening parts.
When the threaded method inside the cartridge is threaded. The same thread is cut at the end of the tool shaft. Chuck just wrapped around this thread.
The locking screw can be used for additional fastening of the screw-in chuck on the shaft. The screw usually has a Phillips head screwdriver and left-hand thread. To see it, you need to maximize the cams of the cartridge.
The method of attachment can be found out by careful inspection of the details. On the cartridge with a Morse taper there will be something like this: 1-6 В10. It means that nozzles with a shank diameter of 1-6 mm can be fixed in the chuck, B10 is the designation of the size of the Morse taper.
A threaded connection may have the following marking: 1.0-11 M12x1.25. Figures 1.0-11 show the diameter of the nozzle shank, M12x1.25 - the size of the metric thread. In models of foreign manufacturers used inch thread. It is designated as: 2-13 mm ½-20 UNF.Back to table of contents
Ways to remove the cartridge
When removing the cartridge from the screwdriver, you will need a hex key.
Removing the cartridge from the screwdriver often helps savvy. You can do it like this:
- You need to take a hex key about 10 mm in size.
- Hold the short end of the key in the chuck.
- For a few seconds, turn on the screwdriver so that the key, clamped in the chuck, with a free end, hits the table or workbench.
- Remove the cartridge by turning the key. He should now easily go down the thread.
There is another way that masters often use:
- It is necessary to completely unclench the internal cams of the cartridge.
- Inside you can see the screw with the left thread.
- Turn this screw clockwise.
- Tighten the hexagon in the chuck.
- Try turning it counterclockwise.
- If the cartridge is not removed, you can sharply hit the end of the hex key with a hammer.
If these methods do not help, the screwdriver will have to disassemble and remove the spindle together with the gearbox and the chuck. All this needs to be clamped in a vice and unscrew the cartridge with a pipe wrench. Sometimes on the cartridge there may be special undercuts under the wrench. They greatly simplify the task. But it happens very rarely.
The cartridge on the Morse taper is removed by a method of knocking it out with a hammer blow on the body. All these methods are applicable to any type of screwdrivers and electric drills.
It is better to warn in advance of situations with difficulties in removing the cartridge. To do this, do not overload the tool. Every 15 minutes of work, give him rest until the body temperature drops to the level of the ambient temperature.Back to table of contents
How to choose a new cartridge
When choosing a cartridge for the screwdriver, remember that they are of different types.
So, the cartridge is removed. Now you need to choose another in its place. These devices are of different types:
- key cartridge in which the bit is clamped with a key;
- Keyless keyless chuck.
In the key unit, the work bit can be mounted and fastened more securely. But keyless chucks provide sufficient fixation. Replacing a drill or bits happens very quickly. Lack of teeth on the cartridge ensures safety of work. Which option to choose for your own tool?
If you have to change bits frequently during work, the quick-release chuck is the best choice. For fastening and fixing the drill of large diameter more suitable key cartridge.
Next you need to choose the right thread. Its size is usually written on the cartridge. The same applies to the choice of the cone. In any case, the old cartridge can be brought to the store, where experts will help you make the right choice. GOST 9953-82 provides 9 different standard sizes of a Morse cone:
- AT 7;
- AT 10;
- AT 12;
The larger the number, the larger the cone.
On products of foreign production used inch carving. Marking it approximately like this: 2-13 mm ½-20 UNF. 2-13 is the diameter of bits in mm, ½ is the diameter in inches of the cut thread, 20 is the number of threads per inch. Morse taper and threaded cartridges can be either key or fast-locking.Back to table of contents
How to use a screwdriver
For the tool to serve long and reliably, you need to use it correctly. The general rules are:
Screwdriver device scheme.
- It is necessary to protect the instrument from moisture ingress into it.
- Screwdriver must be pre-adjusted.
- For various tasks, you need to rebuild the device in advance.
- When replacing the bits, it is recommended to disconnect the battery.
- Store the equipment in a dry place.
- In case of prolonged downtime, the device should sometimes be switched on to partially discharge the batteries.
- Experienced craftsmen advise to have 2-3 batteries.
Moisture inside the tool can damage it. When adjusting, the shaft rotation speed and other parameters are set. This is done using special switches. Changing working nozzles (drills, bits), it is better to disconnect the battery. This will prevent accidental switching on of the tool. After the batteries are discharged, they need to be charged again.
To work properly, you need to have a set of nozzles. He can be big and small. It is desirable that its membership included:
- Crusades nozzles of different sizes.
- Hex bits
- Bits for screwing nuts and bolts.
- Slotted bits.
- Triangular bits.
- Nozzles for work with drywall.
Cross nozzles are used when working with screws. Hexagons — when screwing in and unscrewing screws that have a hex groove in the cap. To work with various appliances need bits of asterisks. Slotted nozzles are designed for ordinary screws. Nozzles for working with plasterboard have special limiters that do not allow to spoil the surface of the finishing material.
