The improper operation of any tool not only shortens its service life significantly, but also makes it potentially traumatic. This is especially true of mechanisms with an initially high risk of injury, which includes a chainsaw.
The scheme of the chainsaw device.
Operation of the tool always begins with its preparation for work. In the case of a chainsaw, this is primarily its refueling. And although in itself refilling a chainsaw is not a super-complicated operation, its incorrect or careless execution can cause a serious danger of a tool breakage and injury to the person working with it.
Fuel mixture preparation
Almost all the engines of chainsaws existing today are two-stroke. In practice, this means that for their normal and safe operation you need not pure gasoline, but a fuel mixture of gasoline with the addition of a certain amount of engine oil to it. This is a feature of all two-stroke engines: their lubrication during operation is carried out with oil entering the cylinders simultaneously with the supply of gasoline.
The optimal ratio of engine oil and gasoline in the mixture for chainsaws is considered to be 1:50.
Usually, the octane rating of gasoline, preferred by the engine for optimum performance of the engine, and the manufacturer of the chainsaw indicate the recommended oil grade in the operating manual attached to it. The same guide also indicates the optimal ratio of engine oil and gasoline, and this ratio is not static and, depending on the type of oil, ranges from 1:25 to 1: 100. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, a ratio of 1:50 is used, and quite often this ratio is used when there is no instruction manual (for example, when buying a used chainsaw).
But such actions still can not be considered fully justified. The engine of a modern chainsaw can operate at maximum speeds of 13.5 thousand per minute, which leaves no room for experiments with its lubrication. The only thing that is justified in allowing the preparation of the fuel mixture for second-hand chainsaws, in which the engine is already very worn out, is to increase the initially recommended amount of engine oil added to gasoline by 5-6%.
For sentencing the fuel mixture, it is desirable to use a special container with labels on the body.
The ratio figures indicate the number of parts of gasoline per 1 part of oil. If you translate the 1:50 ratio to a more familiar system of measures, this means that 20 ml of oil are needed for 1 l of gasoline. The fuel mixture is prepared in compliance with the specified proportions in a certain sequence.
First, the oil is completely poured into the iron tank, then half the required amount of gasoline is added to it. It is not recommended to use plastic cans or plastic bottles for this, as their material may react with gasoline, quickly oxidizing. Then the infused oil and gasoline are thoroughly mixed to obtain a homogeneous color of the mixture, only after that the second half of the gasoline is added, bringing the amount to the required volume.
Ideally, in order to continue the service life, the oil specified in the manual should be used to prepare the fuel mixture, especially since many chainsaw manufacturers produce their own oils, developed and adapted specifically for these tools, in parallel with their own brand.Back to table of contents
Chainsaw refueling sequence
To prevent any unpleasant incidents from occurring during start-up and later during operation of the refilled chainsaw, you must strictly follow the rules and sequence of refueling:
When refueling the chainsaws, the necks are directed upwards and wiped dry, and the fuel is poured into the funnel, all covers are carefully sealed.
- a clean and level surface is needed to complete the refueling;
- Do not refuel close to sources of ignition;
- the fuel and oil tank necks should be facing up during refueling;
- wipe clean with a dry cloth before refilling the filler neck;
- The fuel cap must be removed with extreme care to prevent fuel spills from spilling;
- fuel in the tank must be poured slowly and carefully, it is better to fill with the help of a funnel;
- oil in the oil tank also need to be poured very carefully;
- the lid of the filled tank must be screwed in to the stop and secured with a lock to prevent its spontaneous unscrewing;
- refueling tanks must be absolutely tight, in case of the slightest leakage, it is strictly forbidden to run the filled saw;
- you cannot start the chainsaw at the very place where it was fueled: you need to move at least 2 m;
- Do not smoke or use open fire while refueling.
Remember that the observance of these simple, but very important rules - the key to your safety during refueling and in the future while working with a chainsaw.Back to table of contents
Features refueling chainsaws
You can’t use gasoline below A-92 to refuel imported chainsaws, and A-76 is suitable for domestic products. Immediately before pouring the mixture into the tank, it must be shaken again directly in the container until a uniform color is obtained.
You need to refuel the chainsaw carefully without spilling the mixture past the fuel tank.
For the same reason, you should not fill the tank completely, you need to leave at least one finger in it.
To control the level of the fuel mixture in the tank, it is released with transparent walls.
Fuel system for chainsaws: 1 - fuel filter, 2 - carburetor, 3 - manual pre-priming pump.
The fuel tank of a chainsaw with a capacity of 2 kW (which corresponds to 2.7 hp) is slightly more than 0.5 liters. With constant work with a maximum load, the average fuel consumption is 1.2 l / h. It is easy to calculate that one refueling lasts approximately half an hour of intensive work. In less powerful chainsaws, in which the volume of the tank is smaller, and the operating time on one refueling decreases.
In addition to refueling the fuel tank in the design of chainsaws, there is one more tank, which also needs to be refilled simultaneously with refueling the fuel tank. This tank is designed for special chain lubrication oil. It is easy to distinguish them - the logo of a gas dispenser is usually depicted on the fuel cap, and a stylized image of a drop of oil is depicted on the oil cap.
Chainsaw manufacturers for chain lubrication produce branded oil containing special additives that help keep it on the chain. But it is quite expensive, so the owners of chainsaws, in order to save, often replace it with transmission or engine oils.
This replacement is not welcomed by chainsaw manufacturers, but it does not have a noticeable negative effect on the operation of the tool, with the exception of a slightly higher replacement expense compared to the original oil.
The consumption of these two tanks is adjusted so that the production of oil in the oil tank slightly lags behind the production of the fuel mixture. In other words, when with a properly adjusted carburetor that is responsible for fuel consumption, the fuel tank is completely empty, there should be some oil in the oil tank. If the fuel mixture is produced much faster than the oil for lubrication of the chain, then this is already an obvious signal to check the operation of the engine, first of all - the carburetor.
The chainsaw has long been one of the most sought after tools. But such popularity can not make it less traumatic. Therefore, in its operation, care and adjustments can not be small things. Knowing how to properly handle a chainsaw, and applying this knowledge in practice, you will protect yourself from serious injury and injury.
