How to make an electric plane with your own hands

Wood processing involves monotonous physical work. To facilitate this process, you can make an electric plane with your own hands.

Many people like working with wood. This is not surprising, because it is pleasant to make a wooden table for the veranda on your own, to assemble a bench for your own garden, or simply to replace leaky boards. Anyone can handle wood using this mechanical tool, even a beginner.

This electrical device is designed to reduce the thickness of wood blanks, plan, customize, process boards on the frame, cut edges and create lengthy grooves of various shapes in products. All this refers to one type of work - planing. The electric plane is not suitable for processing a large area, but with small volumes the tool will greatly simplify the work of any master.

The electrical plane is used for processing wood up to 12 cm wide. The depth of processing is 0.12 cm. The workpiece to be machined will rest on a plate with a hole for a knife-type shaft. The square for the direction is fixed on the base plate with the help of several M8 screws with plastic hats. This element will not allow lateral displacement of the workpiece during processing.

The bearings of the knife-type rotating shaft bearings will be attached to the plate from the bottom, and M6 screws with hidden caps must be used as fasteners. Outside the plate for support at the end of the knife-type shaft, it will be necessary to mount the V-belt pulley. The plate is fastened with 10 screws to the body of the manufactured tool, which is welded from a corner of steel with dimensions of 20x20x3 mm.

Electroplaning Housings

To protect your hands from the planer blade you will need a protective cover.

The protective cover is fastened to the housing with several M6 screws with cylinder-shaped heads. In this case it will also be necessary to use spring washers. The electric motor of the manufactured fixture is placed inside the case, for fastening it will be necessary to use two supports from strips of steel. They have several holes with a diameter of approximately 6.5 mm, which are intended to be fixed to the tool body. The elements provide several slots that provide installation and adjustment of the placement of the electric motor for belt tension.

The electric motor of the device is controlled by a remote control, which is located on the front of the case. Under the U-shaped bracket inside the console you will need to locate several phase-shifting capacitors, which should be fixed in parallel. The capacity of these elements is 4 μF. The switch is mounted on the outside of the console. The electric motor can be protected from a direct hit of dust and shavings by a special casing.

The sequence of actions for the assembly tool

The first thing you need to make a plate for support. The most time-consuming process is the implementation of a shaped slot in the plate, which is intended to exit the knives. In this case, you will need to use an electric drill with a circle to cut a small diameter or make holes along the contour, and then cut the cut with a file. After preparing the holes for fasteners in the base plate, you will need to thread the holes in them at the corners of the electric planer body.

Electroplaning knives

The electroplaning knives are mounted on the upper part of the rotating tool drum.

Before welding, you need to attach the upper corners with 10 screws to the plate for support, then with the help of welding you need to attach the remaining corners of the housing. Next, the plate for the support must be dismantled, the body should be finally welded along the contour, then cleaned up the weld seams. Especially carefully you need to clean on the plane in which the body is adjacent to the plate. It is not allowed to leave a gap, as they can provoke vibration in the process of electroplaning. This must be taken into account.

After the assembly has been completed, the knife-type shaft will roll counterclockwise - towards the feed, when viewed from the console. The direction should be exactly to the feed, as the V-belt pulley can not move in the other direction. Before starting work, the tool body must be fastened without gaps. For fixing, use M6 screws.

A knife-type shaft for making grooves should be equipped with several knives that are 12 cm wide.

On the reverse side of the shaft, you will need to install a counterweight in order to be able to eliminate imbalance and vibration.

Each knife is fixed with the help of plates for clamping and screws M8, which are screwed into the through threaded holes of the scrolling shaft of the knife type.

For knives, a suitable blank is a fabricated saw file for metal with a thickness of about 3 mm. The angle of sharpening the edge for cutting knives should be in the range of 35-40 °. In the process of figure sharpening, it will be possible to get a relief base for an artistic frame or platbands.

Reiki profiles of small thickness can be harvested by performing a longitudinal cutting board of greater thickness. In the process of working with small width knives, it is not allowed to cut grooves with a depth of less than 8 mm, as the tool has insufficient strength.

Repair electric chop do-it-yourself

Virtually all electric tools consist of a mains cable with a plug, an off button (in most cases with a voltage regulator), an electric motor, a gearbox, an actuator and a housing.

To repair the electroplane, you first need to determine the fault. If the instrument does not show any signs of life, you will need to use a multimeter or a 220V test lamp.

To perform the repair, the first step is to disassemble the electroplane. It is necessary to disassemble until all current-carrying elements become available. Next, you will need to turn on the power cable to the power grid and check the presence of voltage in all areas, starting from the cable itself, ending with the electric motor brushes. If all components are checked and voltage is applied to the electric motor, it will be necessary to dismantle it and repair it.

Mechanical faults can be identified by visual inspection. You can repair faulty components, but it is recommended to replace them completely.

Making an electric plane with your own hands is easy, you just need to prepare all the necessary elements.
