High-quality replacement of knives of electrical chopping

A good intermediate branch between professional manual planers is an electric planer. Some models have just a few functions, starting with an ordinary planer and ending with a mini-machine. As an addition, such a tool can have an attachment, due to which the unit can be turned upside down and permanently fixed on the workbench.

But with frequent use, cutting elements lose their former sharpness, as indicated by poor chip removal. Replacing the electric chopping knives Interskol, as well as any other models, is carried out according to a similar principle. The only difference is that the tools may have different attachments.

Often knives for electroplaning go double-sided, 2 pcs. in each set. Not all parts should be changed immediately, some brands of blades can be sharpened.

Main types of knives

The fastening of the cutting elements occurs on a rotating drum tool. Their main task is to remove the upper layers of the working material during planing. The knife can have one or two cutting edges. The latter products are called turning points, since it is possible to change their position from a dull blade to a sharp one. There are knives that are made of tool steel, and they can be sharpened, and there are those that are made of tungsten carbide, and then a new installation of knives is required.

Types of blades for planers

According to the shape of the blade are divided:

  1. Straight lines Used for work with narrow details, if necessary, and a selection of quarters.
  2. Rounded. Used in the processing of wide parts.
  3. Undulating. They are resorted to when the surface must be “aged”. These knives are also called curly.

Before turning on the electroplane, you should carefully check the correct installation of the cutting elements. With proper attachment, the blade should protrude out quite a bit (0.5 mm), and the location itself should be parallel to the sole. Such a moment can be determined visually by turning the tool upside down.

To adjust the position of the knife, turn the small and large adjustment screw first to one side and then to the other. They are located behind the platform under the knife.

Next, the element is installed in the electric planer and fixed by the centering lever and the screw located on the top plate. If you have to work with a new tool, then, most likely, all adjustments were made in advance, but it does not interfere with making sure. In addition, during the constant use of technology, the setting tends to go astray. In order to make sure that the adjustment is correct, it is best to test the electric planer on some unnecessary boards.

The knife under the tool has not only a certain shape, but also a size. Depending on the manufacturer, whether imported or domestic, the size of the knives can vary. For example, foreign analogues have a standard length of 8.2 cm, are called “plate”. Depending on the manufacturer, the price of such components will also vary. The Zubr firm produces knives that are suitable not only for domestic units, but also for foreign equipment. But here it is worthwhile to immediately stipulate that the cheaper the manufacturer is, the lower the quality and strength of this element.

Individual models of power tools may have a set of certain knives. This refers to Interskol and Baikal planes; they require knives with a wider and thicker blade. Their strength is somewhat higher, so they are not afraid of "rough" work. The standard width is 1 cm, the length can vary between 82 and 102 cm, they are quite easy to sharpen on sandpaper, although this will still require some experience.

Rare in demand are wide and thick knives with special holes for fasteners. Most often they are installed on powerful units (2000 W). The width of such blades can be 11 cm.

How to change the knife on the electric plane?

To perform quality work, the sharpness of the knife must be at a good level.

The layout of the drum with blades

The layout of the drum with blades.

If you look at the light chamfer and turn it around the cutting edge, you will see a shiny strip in shape, resembling a thread, it means that the knife is dulled and requires sharpening or replacement. Electrician knives sharpened at an angle of 30 °.

As noted above, today you can choose a tool to which double blades fit. In this case, when one side becomes unusable, the knife is turned the other and continues to work. But after the second blade was dull, the electric planer was equipped with a new knife.

In the body transverse groove there are three nuts, which are designed to fix the cutting parts. The knife is installed in them, after which the height is adjusted with the help of two screws that are located at the edges. In order to remove the old blade, it is necessary to loosen the nuts, while tightening the screws to the very end. This will allow the knife holder to slide out of the slot.

Picks up the hammer under the thickness of the knife. With the help of its cutting element is knocked out of the latch. After that, the new knife is driven into the place of the old one. At this stage, special attention is paid to the parallel finding of the blade relative to the knife holder.

And again, we should not forget that the new cutting tool should be adjusted in height with screws, and then fasten it with nuts. To avoid unbalance of the shaft, the same clearance is set for the knives.

The entire procedure for replacing the knives should only take place on an off electric planer.

Editing on the wheel: recommendations

Electroplaning knives

The electroplaning knives are mounted on the upper part of the rotating tool drum.

The quality of planing depends on the sharpness of the knife used. But this does not mean that if the blade is slightly dulled, it should be changed immediately. After all, such details are not so cheap, so after each job to buy new ones. A way out of this position is edging. A grinding wheel is used for this purpose.

Grinding is a fairly simple process. To do this, the knife is placed on the flat surface of the grinding wheel, and in the process of grinding you need to move it from one side to the other. During this action, the parts will heat up, due to which one should not make excessive efforts. Otherwise it may lead to loss of edge hardness or to the fact that it becomes blue.

After the blade is ground, it needs to be corrected. For the manual process usually use the oselki. They are artificial or natural bars. If you use the machine method, then in this case the finishing disk is used.

While straightening with Belgian oil panes, water must be used, and for the Arkansas ones - a mixture of oil and kerosene. In turn, bars made of artificial materials may differ in grain size: coarse and fine. The first side performs a more rough editing, while the second requires a more "jewelry" approach. If you use the donkey without lubrication, then it will spoil the knife, as it will lose its hardening. In addition, after each procedure, the bar should be washed well, otherwise it will become dirty.

The edge of the blade must be rested against the bar and led by it with cross-shaped movements, until its surface acquires a gloss similar to the mirror one. In addition, no burrs should remain on the electroplaning knife. The front side is up and down.

The machine finishing disc is made of artificial materials, as a result of which its surface becomes abrasive. Mechanical editing takes much less time than manual, but the purchase of appropriate equipment will be somewhat more expensive.

A few words in conclusion

Before you start installing new knives on an electric planer, you should make sure that this procedure is necessary. If the tool does not run well on the working surface, compared to how it was done before, then you should think about sharpening the cutting elements. In addition, the important point is that if you continue to work with a “blunt” electric planer, then there is a chance that if you hit a hard part of the tree (knots, chips), the tool will drop, and this may already be fraught with consequences for the health of the operator.

It is very important to remember the moment that if there is no confidence in their abilities regarding the replacement of the electroplaning knives, it is better to turn to specialists. After all, if you install it incorrectly, there is a chance of breaking an expensive tool, and also, by plugging it into a network, you will be injured. Therefore, it is better not to risk it.
