How to use a laser level

The ability to use a laser level allows the master to quickly and efficiently perform a number of works. Alignment of surfaces, installation of baseboards, windows or interior items - these and many other operations are much more convenient to do with such a tool than with its predecessors (plumb and construction level). And when working in areas with a large area of the laser level will be indispensable.

The principle of operation of the laser level

The principle of the laser level.

  1. First of all, the level is equipped with tools that allow you to clearly orient it in space vertically and horizontally. These tools include not only traditional bubble levels that require user participation, but also “tricky” electronic systems that automatically adjust the position of the instrument with very high accuracy. Moreover, at present, the autocorrection function is no longer a rarity, now it is often equipped with even the simplest and cheapest models.
  2. The basic function of any laser level is to project a light image in the form of a cross. If the device is installed correctly, the cross will consist of a strictly vertical and strictly horizontal line. They will serve as an excellent guide when installing a window, curtain rail, wardrobe or plinth. At the same time, the master will not need to constantly apply a building level to the installed structure or detail; to check the correctness of their position, one glance at the image projected by the laser level will be enough.
  3. Also, the laser beam is very convenient to put beacons in the device floor screed or leveling the walls. A more sophisticated model that can project not only a cross, but also a multitude of vertical or horizontal lines with a laser beam sweep at an angle, the magnitude of which can reach 360 °, can be useful here.
  4. If for some work you need an inclined landmark, for example, one of the details of the design must be placed at an angle of 45 °, then you simply cannot do without a laser level. To cope with this task, the usual level or plumb can not in any way because of the principle of their device.

Choosing a level

Before you get a laser level, you need to think about a few questions. The most important of these concerns the functionality of the device. As already mentioned, the simplest models simply project the image in the form of a cross. Some manufacturers (Skill, for example) offer such tools at a fairly affordable price - about 1000 rubles. But cheap laser levels have one drawback: they generate weak radiation, so with a long distance or bright light the picture on the object can be almost invisible.

The professional-level models have a bright and “long-range” beam, but their price is higher - from 2000 rubles. But such levels can perform the tasks we have mentioned above, “show” several reference lines, sweep the beam, etc. These also include rotational levels in which you can set the frequency of beam generation. All these “gadgets” will be needed by those who plan complex works, for example, the device of partitions or the installation of intricate ceiling structures.

Useful is the pulse mode, which allows you to save power sources, thereby extending their service life. If the tool is supposed to be used at large distances, choose a model with an optical viewfinder that will allow accurate aiming.

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the instrument package. And here, first of all, you should think about the safety of your own health. The fact is that a laser beam of a level, at least of a budget, even of a premium class, can cause serious disturbances if it hits the cornea or retina. With this in mind, we can recommend the purchase of models, complete with protective glasses. Such a purchase is also justified by the fact that the beam seems brighter in them.

In addition to goggles, a tripod, tuning targets, magnetic or wall clips, radiation detectors (receivers), a case (for expensive models - shockproof box), a charger and batteries can be supplied with the laser level. Detectors may be needed in cases where the image needs to be projected over long distances or in bright lighting conditions (for example, outside) when it becomes difficult to visually monitor it. The receiver has an increased sensitivity to laser radiation and as soon as it detects it, it will immediately signal. Products with an extended bundle are often labeled SET. The instruction in which rules of use of a level are stated, all devices are supplied, but it is very important how clear it will be for you. It is best to choose a level with the instruction manual in Russian, especially if the device has a wide range of functions.

The work of the laser level

The laser level, equipped with automatic functions, quickly takes measurements.

It often happens that one or another accessory bundled with the model you like is not supplied, so you have to buy it separately. It is very important to clarify its compatibility with your level. This applies not only to glasses and detectors, but also targets and even fixtures. By "non-native" tripods sometimes have to buy more adapters.

When buying a level, we recommend paying attention to those manufacturers who have already established themselves in the market.

It is not necessary that their products will certainly belong to the middle or expensive segment. Good "state employees" are produced by X-Line, Condtroll, ADA Instruments. If you are interested in more serious options, pay attention to levels from Leicae or Bosch.

For measurement accuracy, the laser level is set on a tripod.

Before starting work, you should carefully study the instructions. Each model has its own characteristics and for the most effective use of it, familiarizing with general recommendations published on the Internet or in journals will not be enough. If you are going to use the level on the street, pay attention to the conditions under which it is allowed. The instructions should set out the requirements regarding the temperature and humidity of the air, the content of dust in it, and stipulate the possibility of using the instrument in the rain.

Use of any device should begin with the installation of power supplies. If these are batteries, they must first be fully charged. Having checked the operation of the device, it must be installed on the mount - a tripod, an expansion rod or a magnetic retainer.

Now you can disable the lock compensator by pressing the appropriate button.

It is necessary to block the compensator so that during transportation or storage of the tool it is not damaged.

Getting Started

Complete set of a level

A typical set of a laser level includes: a level, a control panel, a spare battery and protective glasses.

The key stage of using the level is to install it in the correct position. The quality of work performed depends on the accuracy with which this operation is performed. Most levels have an auto-tuning function, but this option plays the role of a closer - it can only correct the position of the device by an angle of up to 8-10 °. Preliminary installation is carried out by the user. At the same time it focuses on the readings of bubble levels set in different planes. If not, use the normal level to install.

When the tool is installed more or less smoothly, you can run the auto-tuning function. Most models at the stage of auto-correction of their own position begin to blink, while others emit a beep. If it stopped or the instrument stopped blinking, it means that it assumed a perfectly level, strictly horizontal-vertical position.

Before turning on the radiator do not forget to wear safety glasses. While using the level it is better not to take them off at all, in order to avoid accidental hitting the laser beam in the eye. Modern devices use a safer radiation option (class 2), but even it allows only very short-term contact with eyes without serious consequences.

Wearing glasses, turn on the device and check how well it projects the vertical and horizontal lines together and separately. To do this, use the mode switching key.

If everything is working properly, you can start work. To save battery power, switch the device to exactly the mode that is needed at the moment; turn off unnecessary landmarks. When leveling the surfaces, the device should not only be installed in a horizontal / vertical position, but also placed in such a way that the laser beam is at a certain distance from the structures. In order to make the installation with the greatest possible accuracy, manufacturers of levels offer special targets. The use of such accessories is especially useful in cases where work is carried out in rooms with a large area or height of the ceiling.

The method of application of the level, depending on the type of work performed

When aligning surfaces along the beam, it is convenient to set up beacons.

When laying tile laser crosshairs can be directed to the intersection of the seams and on it to put the tile in the correct position. When pasting walls with wallpaper, you should leave only a vertical reference point (this will prolong battery life), which will help to position the rolls vertically.

But when installing the curb, plinth or cornice for curtains, on the contrary, you need a horizontal reference point.
