To make it much easier for craftsmen to work, a workbench was invented. This is quite a heavy and very durable desktop, on which you can handle various materials. The design of such a table must withstand even a strong mechanical effect. As for the form and design, such a table can be completely different, to a greater extent it depends on personal preferences and needs. For the manufacture of such a structure can be used wood or metal, depending on the purpose and the intended load.
The metal workbench is a table that can be made of wood or metal, designed for plumbing work.
The abundance of materials that you can buy today in the hardware store, allows you to make a workbench metalwork yourself. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the workbench can be of two types:
The joinery element has a simpler design. It is much easier to make such a workbench with your own hands, but you can only work with wooden products in the finished form on such a table. This is due to the fact that the surface of such a tool will be made of wood or covered with linoleum. When working with metal products on such a surface, there is a chance that metal chips will get stuck in the coating or oil will be absorbed into it. Unlike the metal pad, wooden is less stable. And therefore it can bear a certain load.
The joiner's workbench has a simpler design and is usually made of wood.
In the garage most often set-ups made of metal. This design will allow to process parts from different materials on it. Such a table can withstand even the strongest blows and mechanical impacts. Wood can also be processed on a metal surface, so today it is a universal option. Due to the high load on the tabletop during operation, the design must be very strong and stable.
The workbench can be single and for several workplaces. For home conditions will be enough single table. Multiplace surfaces are used in manufacturing or school workshops. Behind a working surface several people can be at the same time. In order for the instrument to meet all the requirements of the master, it must be made according to individual parameters.
Design and basic principles of work
In the classic version, the metal workbench consists of several basic elements:
The design of the metal workbench.
- the table;
In order to increase the functionality of the working surface, the understay is made of wood, and it must be soft enough. Metal workbench with their own hands is made of plywood or MDF (tabletop). It is very important to control that a suitable thickness of the sheet material is selected. In order to increase the strength of the tabletop and extend its service life, it is covered with a steel sheet. On three sides must necessarily be the side. In addition, there should be no sharp corners on the tabletop, which can cause injury to a person.
All boxes, especially large ones, should be equipped with guides, which will prevent them from falling. The number of boxes and various boxes directly depends on the needs of the owner.
For large inventory is to make or choose a table with large drawers and bedside tables.
The most convenient and practical is a workbench with built-in drawers.
If a large number of small parts are used in the work, then the small compartments should be much larger. Quite often you can find workbenches with a protective screen. It is a sheet of steel that protects the back wall from impacts and other impacts. Therefore, you can safely place the tools over the entire surface and not be afraid that the wall of the building will be smeared out.
The legs for such a table must be very strong and have sufficient size in order to withstand all the loads. For additional stability, the legs are interconnected by special jumpers. In order to maximize the useful area under the table, in the locations of such jumpers, you can install additional shelves for various cans and other equipment. A vice is attached to the surface of the metal workbench. For maximum convenience, they should be two, at different ends of the table. The vise should be of two types: for the stop and with the clamping screw.
Making a workbench with your own hands, you can make a hole in the tabletop, which will allow in the process to throw unnecessary waste into the dustbin. Analogs of such tables can be viewed in the store or on the Internet. It is very important to equip the table with a sufficient number of compartments, drawers, tool holders. It is worth considering the location of lighting fixtures and outlets.Back to table of contents
Before you start to do the workbench with your own hands at home, you need to think everything through and calculate. That in the course of work everything followed the conceived plan, without fail it is necessary to make the drawing. It should be made at a convenient scale and meet all the planned size. In order to determine the height of the working surface, you need to stand up and lower your arms, palms should be in a position parallel to the floor. It is this distance from the floor to the palms that will correspond to the height of the working surface.
In addition to height, it is necessary to make calculations of the dimensions of the whole structure. The workbench is characterized by a long working surface, and the longer it is, the easier it is to work with. The width of the table should be at least 50-60 cm, while the length should be at least 1.5 meters. For the manufacture of countertops can be used sheet steel or wood, which later will be covered with a metal sheet.
To create the frame most often used are angles or metal shaped pipes. It is worthwhile to consider the method of fixing the workbench to the floor. It is recommended to immobilize the table, in order to avoid traumatic accidents. To do this, plates with holes are welded to the legs of the shelf, through which later will be mounted to the floor.
Arranging workbench workplace.
At the stage of designing and creating a drawing it is very important to think about the lighting of the workplace. The light source must be placed in front of the person. This will allow you to work with good lighting. Sockets should be in an accessible place, since in most cases the work is done with electric tools.
The finished drawing allows you to calculate the amount of material needed, which will minimize the amount of waste. In the process, there will be no need to go to the store for one missing part. At the stage of preparation of parts, it is necessary to adjust as accurately as possible all sizes and to carefully handle sharp edges. This will create a reliable design that will last a long time.Back to table of contents
The scheme of making worktops for the workbench.
Before starting work, you should once again examine the finished drawing and make sure that the design fully satisfies all requirements. All profile pipes and metal corners are cut into parts of the desired size using a grinder. The corner should be with a minimum size of 40 * 40 mm. If a profile is used, its cross section should not be less than 30 * 50 mm. It is also worth preparing a metal strip, which will be used to mount the tabletop to the legs.
For countertops, well-dried boards of 50 * 100 or 50 * 150 mm can be used. Shelves with drawers can also be made of wood, but they should be upholstered with metal. Galvanized sheet with a minimum thickness of 2 mm should be used for the table top. For wooden sides it is also worth preparing 3 strips of metal, which in size will correspond to the width and length of the table. But still it is worth noting that the best option for the countertop will be sheet steel, which, even with strong shocks, is not deformed.Back to table of contents
Making a metal workbench with your own hands
In order to assemble a structure, a minimum set of tools is needed:
- Bulgarian for cutting metal parts;
- welding machine for the connection;
- saw for wooden worktop;
- roulette and chalk for basting;
- drill, screwdriver.
Prepared parts should be checked again for defects. After you can proceed to the assembly. The connection of all parts by welding. Additional jumpers are fixed at a height of 100 mm from the floor. Additionally, a second element can be installed at a distance of 100 mm from the table top.
After the lower part of the structure is ready, the assembly of the table top begins. The surface of the table should be 20 cm more on each side. This will provide an opportunity to secure the grip. For the frame is to use a corner 50 * 50 mm. It is very important to weld the strips of metal, with the help of which the frame with the table top will be fastened. At this stage it is worth considering a protective screen. In the corners of the table top in advance it is necessary to make holes with which the boards with a metal corner will be fixed. For fastening most often used screws with a secret washer. The wooden tabletop is eventually covered with metal, suitable screws are used for fastening. All shelves that are made of wood should be upholstered with metal or covered with a special tool that will increase the fire resistance.
It is recommended to cover the finished construction of the workbench with a special paint for metal. This will provide an opportunity to significantly increase the service life of the tool. Metal, the surface of which is coated with a protective paint and varnish, is not susceptible to corrosion for a long time.
