How to make a cone for a wood splitter

The majority of summer residents, who often have to chop firewood by hand, think about how to make this work easier. To ensure the supply of fuel for the entire cold season, we have to work a lot. Not surprisingly, people are trying to somehow mechanize the process.

It does not work out chainsaw: it has a fundamentally different purpose. With its help, transverse cutting of wood is performed. And with heavy and heavy logs only heavy hammers and thick wedges can cope. But, despite the effectiveness of such an impact, the performance of this method is no different.

Cones for a wood splitter are made in accordance with one of the two main structural schemes. In the manufacture of one of them the cone must be installed on the shaft of an electric motor having a power of 3-5 kW with a speed of not more than 500.

In another embodiment, the device is composed of two-strand pulleys with different diameters and drive belts. A large pulley is installed on the shaft with a cleaver screw, and a small pulley is mounted on the motor shaft.

Security measures

If the machine for chopping firewood is supposed to be made independently, one should remember such a circumstance as a high speed of rotation of the working element. A speed of 500 revolutions per minute greatly increases the risk of possible injury at work, as it will be difficult to hold the log in your hands.

To reduce the risk of injury, a steel fixed part is sometimes installed under the screw of the cleaver so that the log does not rebound. Also, some craftsmen instead of an electric motor install the unit, removed from the motoblock and running on gasoline, with a capacity of 6 horsepower. But for such devices it is preferable to use an electric motor with a rotational speed of 250 revolutions per minute.

When collecting items for compiling them into a single device, the search for a tapered screw may be the most difficult. It is not so easy to purchase it if you are determined to assemble the apparatus with your own hands from improvised means.

Option one: how to carve a cone with your own hands using a grinder?

If it is impossible to independently grind such a part on a machine and it is impossible to order it in a turning workshop, many people try to make a cone using a grinder. You only need to find a suitable metal blank. It may be useful to pre-draw a scheme. Since the product is intended for home use, it is not necessary to withstand certain dimensions exactly.

The work in the manufacture of a cone for a wood splitter at home consists of the following: a metal “Bulgarian” is placed on the motor pulley. It should achieve its free rotation, and then begin to evenly remove excess metal from the blank. Better, of course, use a lathe. After preparing the blanks in accordance with the scheme on it cut the left thrust thread. Thread type is important. A metric thread with such work will wear out very quickly, even if there are no special loads. When working with such a detail is very great danger that the log will slip. Therefore, it is necessary to dwell on the details with a resistant thread: it will be better to enter the block and will last a long time.

When the cone is ready, it should be mounted on the shaft with bearings of the desired size.

A flange with an asterisk from the motorcycle wheel is installed at its end. Lock the threaded cone onto the shaft. To do this, use bolts, pins with which you can easily remove the part from the shaft, if it is stuck in the chopped chock, and turn it outwards.

To remove the cone stuck there from the log, use the gas wrench. With its use, you can quickly unscrew the part of wood. Therefore, it is not necessary to firmly fix the cone on the shaft - when jamming, you will need to remove the chain, since it is not always possible to turn the shaft of the electric motor in the opposite direction.

Since it is necessary to withstand extremely high precision in the manufacture of threads, it should be understood that even in capable hands a grinder can hardly be replaced with a quality cutter and a lathe. Therefore, we must try to perform this part on the machine or to entrust the work to an experienced master.

When ordering a taper screw for a log splitter, a turner should leave as detailed as possible diagrams of the required part and specify the parameters. Typically used are: taper - 1: 2, two-thread, with a pitch of 5-6 mm. A thread should have the same tooth profile as a screw designed for wood.

When working on a wood splitter, it is necessary to carry out all actions as carefully as possible. Because of the speed of the rotating cone, you should not try to hold the log, wearing gloves. Feed churbak should be made only with bare hands. Gloves or mittens can hook and thread, and this can seriously injure your fingers or hand.
