How does a hammer drill differ from a drill?

For the manufacture of holes in concrete or brick used mainly perforator or impact drill, the rotational movement of the drill (crowns, drills) which are accompanied by blows, axially directed axes. These two types of electrical equipment are considered to be identical in functionality. Although it is not so at all: they differ among themselves in many respects. What is different from the drill punch? First of all, the difference lies in their purpose, which in the perforator refers to gouging, and in the drill - to drilling.

Mechanism for striking

The dissimilarity of the main function formed the basis for the difference between the schemes of the percussion device. In the perforator, the latter is represented by a rather complex node, expressed in two variants: electropneumatic and electromechanical. The first type is more widespread, it is responsible for better performance characteristics of the instrument.

The rotational type of motion of the electric motor is converted by means of a crank device or a spherical swing bearing into reciprocating piston activity. In the inter-tavern and piston space, under the influence of compression, the piston accelerates and, through the drummer, transfers its own energy to the device (chisel, drill, drill bit, crown, etc.).

The mechanism of the same drill has a much easier execution. It is represented by two ratchets, the first of which is combined with the body, and the second with the rotating rotary chuck.

When the strike mode is off, the ratchets do not interact with each other due to the stopper located between them. When the impact mode is turned on, the latter is removed. And in the pressed position of the drill to the metal surface, the ratchets interact, skipping relative to each other. The drilling device and cartridge are provided with axial reciprocating activity.

Structural dissimilarity of impact devices underlies the existing difference in the operational and technical parameters of the perforator and the impact drill.

Difference of a drill from the punch in functionality

Fully functional drills can perform three working procedures:

Hammer drill

The main scope for the drill is the work of drilling metal, tile and wood surfaces.

  • simple blow (jackhammer mode);
  • simple rotation without the inclusion of strokes;
  • rotation coupled with punches.

The perforator does not serve only as a drilling tool, it is also used for other types of work: stroking or chiselling niches in stone surfaces, chipping off excess material, etc.

Impact drill is used exclusively for drilling holes in concrete. It has two operating modes: unstressed and impact drilling.

The difference between drill and perforator in performance

The difference in perforator performance in drilling stone surfaces is that it many times exceeds this criterion in a impact drill. First and foremost, this pattern is due to the increased impact energy. In perforator models, it reaches 20 J for weighted modifications and 1.5 J for lighter ones. Very insignificant shock energy at the drill. And to a greater extent it is dependent on the effort applied when pressing the tool. Even with a significant force of pressure, the shock energy remains low due to the weak amplitude of the drill movement, corresponding to the height of the ratchet tooth.

Drills and drills in two types of equipment are attached to the chucks, only structurally in different tools they differ among themselves. For the accelerated replacement of devices at the perforator, a clamping system SDS-max, SDS-top, SDS-plus (determined by the diameter of the shank) is provided. In the perforator, the devices have a certain degree of freedom with respect to the cartridge in the axial direction, which makes it possible to reduce the load on the tool during impacts.

To work with a perforator with an ordinary drill, they use an adapter or change a cartridge to a cam. In some versions, due to the unique system of fasteners, the change of cartridges is made instantly. Moreover, the cartridge for an ordinary drill should be supplied together with the punch. With the use of an adapter, a device is created from two successively connected cartridges: SDS and 3-jaws. The omission of this method is the lack of rigidity of attachment of the drill and the beating of the latter during rotation.

What distinguishes a drill from a perforator in particular is the provided working conditions. A punch shows itself much easier. To create an acceptable impact energy, the drill is pressed against the surface of the material being processed with a force of about 10-15 kg. Work with the perforator provides a slight pressure (about 5 kg). Despite the fact that the hands are affected by many times less vibration force than when using a drill. This fact explains the softening effect of the pillow with air in the mechanism of pneumatics, which creates obstacles for a collision between each other of the striker and the piston.

Difference in the period of operation

The hammer drill lasts longer compared to a hammer drill.

Especially if the latter will be used for percussion work very often. Due to its pneumatics, much smaller vibration and more acceptable conditions for the functioning of most of its mechanisms are provided.

The tool is equipped with a safety clutch for protective purposes against breakages for the situation when a drill can jam in the hole, for example, when the latter is sticking on metal reinforcing bars.

What are the price differences between percussion instruments?

With a uniform power (but not shock energy, which is much more in the perforator), the perforator exceeds the drill by almost 1.5-2 times in cost.

What is preferred between the two types of instrument? To unequivocally answer the question of which tool among those described here is better, it will not work. Everything will be reduced to what goals the purchase of electrical equipment. The perforator is ideal if it is necessary to drill and hammer concrete protective structures.

It makes sense to buy when the situation requires the implementation of many holes.

When there is no such need, that is, the tool is needed for domestic needs (for making several holes, for hanging shelves or cabinets on the wall), it is better to give preference to a drill with a percussion mode.

When the tool is planned to be used in repair work for shaving for wiring, sockets and switches, then it would be better not to find a punch in this case. And it is absolutely not necessary to buy new equipment, since it is now possible to rent it from a specialized company.
